Ferry Tayle Interview with Discover Trance Radio

So... In true DT style, we continuously try to pull out all of the stops when it comes to giving YOU great reading, so please, give it up for our very special Trance'O'Ween guest - Mr Ferry Tayle...

Lou
Hi there, and welcome to Discover Trance Radio! So Ferry, you got into electronic music after discovering Jean-Michel Jarre's album.  How did his music influence you to branch out and make your own music?

Ferry Tayle
Hey hey!! Thanks for your welcome!  Well, thanks to my father I discovered electronic music with Jean Michel Jarre & Vangelis, but mainly Jean Michel Jarre.  I was so impressed by the feeling I had when I listened to his awesome tracks and I was in front of my TV watching his different concerts too.  The melody, the sounds were blowing my head.  When I first started to produce, I focused on the sound and tried to remake the touch of Jean Michel Jarre, and learned how to play his tracks.  And now, I'm making my own sound and hope one day to collaborate with him!

Lou
Big ambition for you there!  Collaborating with such an idol... Now, I know that you can play jazz instruments too...  Have you ever used any of your own music that you've played, as samples on your own tracks or remixes?

Ferry Tayle
In 2008, I made a track with Airwave (my partner in crime on the CapeTown project) called 'Batignolles Blues'.  He asked me to play Saxophone on his project.  In the past, I was a huge fan of Hi Gate - 'Saxuality', and so I really enjoyed playing Saxophone on another trance track a lot.  We made the track and I had the chance to perform live at 'Tomorrowland' with my first instrument!  It was awesome.  Jazz and Trance are very near for me, 'cause the 2 styles inspire me with a lot of emotions and love, and I really think I'd like to make some new tracks like 'Batignolles Blues' in the future.

Lou
I love Hi Gate - old skool!  I think I have all of their singles on CD somewhere. How did you approach other Dj's and clubs when you were starting out, to get gigs in clubs?

Ferry Tayle
You know, I'm a shy guy... Really!  The first gig I had, was thanks to my friend who asked the resident of the biggest club in my city, to let me have the chance to play.  After that I worked a lot on my own productions and now it's my music that's speaking for me.  I prefer to let the music talk than me (laugh). So, every time I need to work more!

Lou
Sounds great to me!  Sometimes your friends are the ones that hold the keys to certain doors for you...  Tell us how your project 'CapeTown' was born, and what are the future plans for this?

Ferry Tayle
Well, CapeTown is an old Airwave project. He co-produced amazing trance tracks with Frederico Santini in 2001/2002. But Frederico left the project after that and Airwave ended it too.  In 2005, I discovered (toooo late) the CapeTown track 'Cinema' and I definitely fell in love with it.  I wrote to Airwave to have his authorization to remix it, he said yes and gave me the parts.  A few months later, after finishing my remix, I went to his studio and he discovered my work.  He enjoyed what I did and said me : "We need to release this remix and I want to do something for you...[than, there was a little blank]...I didn't imagine I'd want to reform CapeTown, but by listening to this, CapeTown is you and me now!  I will share you my experience and you will bring me your uplifting style!"  I looked around me and searched about for who he told that to and I said :" Me?!?!, you want me to co-produce CapeTown with you?!?! OMG".  I didn't really realize what happened....few months later, we made 'Proglifter', then 'Percivalesque' and the huge 'Metaphorique'...  I'm a lucky guy!

Lou
Yes indeed you are! Wow, how awesome?! Which leads me nicely into my next question, thank you Ferry!... CapeTown's' first track, 'Proglifter' was propelled to epic proportions in 2006 with support from AvB, Above & Beyond and Manuel le Saux, how do you think this affected your career? and would you be where you are now had this not been released?

Ferry Tayle
'Proglifter' was the first turn of my career 'cause we received such a huge support by everybody and I didn't expect that.  When Armin dropped it on ASOT, and saw the track as future favourite... I couldn't believe what happened!  I was so proud to be part of the CapeTown's rebirth!  But you know, only when 'Metaphorique' was released, people discovered the real faces of CapeTown.  Before, that they thought that I was only Airwave, but it's not a problem to be on the Airwave's shadow!  I learn a lot with him.  He is my Yoda Trance Teacher! (laughs) But when 'Proglifter' was released, I released 'Vol De Nuit' too, a few weeks later and people then discovered me with this track (Future Favourite too and played 4 times in a row on ASOT!)

Lou
Incredible support there, one of the most important things for a track to get somewhere.  A bit like one of your most recent releases, 'L'Acrobat' - this has been a widely played track here on Discover Trance Radio, and is indeed a favourite of mine to put on repeat play :) Tell us how you were inspired to come up with this driving, melodic journey of a track.

Ferry Tayle
Thanks! ;-) Well, I tried to tell a beautiful story across 'L'Acrobat'.  When I produce a track is like producing a movie.  I search for a good story to tell, with emotion, passion and feelings.  For me a track must have a soul and you must have a life with it, and that's what I tried to put on 'L'Acrobat'.

Lou
Well it definitely comes across through it, let me tell you!  Last year saw the release of your album 'Carnet De Vol' (Lou has translated this from French, and it means 'Flightbook') where did you find your inspiration for this title? and how does it relate to the tracks on the album ?

Ferry Tayle
'Carnet de Vol' was an amazing experience!  My second passion after music, is aviation.  I tried to tell some different trips, and tracks are like chapters in a book.  The first Chapter is called 'Check in', which is the launch of the album.  After that, I met some wonderful people across the globe, that inspired me a lot and especially someone who has her name on a track!... And I collaborated with my best friends like Airwave, Stephan R and Manuel Le Saux, so that was pretty cool.  These guys are very important in my life, because I started to work in Trance with Stephan R. under 'Everest' aliases (Everest - 'Oree' released on Monster Tunes in 2005, were us ;-) ), then I joined Airwave on CapeTown's project and he became one of my best friends, and to finish one of the my best meetings was with Manuel Le Saux, who is definitely one of the best guys in this business!  Manuel became one of my best friends too.  Even if we have some full planning, we always take some news by phone, email, etc.

Lou
Aww that is fantastic, really.  So nice to have friends in the business who you can relate to, and by sharing your experiences and news, it helps to keep you grounded too.  So, Ferry you've been djing for over 10 years now,   What do you see yourself doing over the next 10 years?

Ferry Tayle
Wow, good question!  I think I will live in a wood house, somewhere I can go fishing beside a lake, loool.  No seriously, I hope to be still here, (in the business) by producing some great trance stuff (it's not for to me to judge though). But I want to "build" a family too, so I will manage my time between family, full job & music.

Lou
And there you have it, an insight into the wonderful world of Ferry Tayle.  His last answer does sound like a storybook ending, hey?... ;) If you want to catch up with Mr Tayle, you can by visiting the following links :
